CLAIRE DREAMT THAT SHE WAS floating in a warm, inky sea. Glancing around, she could distinguish nothing clearly, only dark, hulking shapes disappearing into shadow. One of the shapes disengaged itself from shadow and began to swim toward her. It looked like a gigantic sponge and, when it reached her, it began to move its wet, soft, rough body across her face, her neck, her arms. “Stop it,” yelled Claire and pushed against it with all her might.

“Yelp,” answered the sponge. She opened her eyes to find the great, lolling head of Escuincle next to hers as he tried to smother her with his savage lick.

“What the hell?” she grumbled and jerked herself out from under him, glancing at her watch as she did so. It was six in the morning so where were Lolo and Sonja? Then she remembered; they had gone to find a driver to take them to San Jose. They ought to be back any minute and, jumping out of bed, she checked her watch again by the light of the dawn-lit window. Would she have time to take a shower? She felt muggy and sticky and decided that she would just have to make time. Now where was the light switch? She walked around the room looking for it and tripping over the dog at every step because poor Escuincle, made desperately insecure by the disappearance of his mistress, refused to budge an inch from Claire. “Buzz off,” she ordered but this only made him look more forlorn. Finally she found the light switch and made her way to the tiny bathroom. She fiddled with the shower taps. “Glory be,” she cried in high triumph when she discovered that there was indeed hot water. Escuincle tried to follow but the hot water hit his nose making him sneeze, growl, and try to escape all at once. He managed to back himself out of the tiny bathroom where he promptly sat down at the doorway and howled. Even through the running water Claire could hear him. Who would own such a dog? she thought. We’ll all be arrested.

Claire, completely relaxed, was luxuriating in the heavy feel of water against her skin when a nudge to her thigh sent her skidding across the floor toward the wall tiles. “Get away, you damned dog,” she bellowed, kicking out with her leg. “You could have broken my neck.”

“Eeeh,” came a shriek. “No hurt me. Is me, Lolo,” and he leapt into the shower and started kissing her all over, from her lips to her toes.

“Stop it. Where’s Sonja?” Claire whispered but he was in one of his most incorrigible moods so she gave up and let him make love to her then and there.

When Claire emerged from the bathroom, shame-faced, Sonja gave her a bemused look but mercifully made no comment. They grabbed their things and went downstairs to pay the bill. The look the desk clerk gave them was anything but bemused. It was almost lascivious in its curiosity and made Sonja start to giggle.
